How Wind Spinners Work

How do metal wind spinners—or, as some folks prefer to call them, windspinners, wind catchers, wind ornaments, wind twisters, or eye catchers—work?

As the spinner rotates in the wind, the light reflects off the different angles of the cut metal, creating the illusion that the center image is expanding to the outer ring of the windspinner. As it continues to rotate, the light reflections pulse, creating a 3D holographic effect.

Some people watching them think the spinners are battery powered because of the brilliant light they emit, but the light is just a series of reflections coming in from different angles. It's a very low-tech way to create a high-tech-looking light show!

Wind spinners produce the most brilliant display on a sunny day, but they'll reflect any light, of course. We have one outside our office that puts on a more subtle, but still impressive, show when there's a full moon.

We chose the wind spinners we carry for their exceptional quality. They far exceed most of the spinners on the market in both materials and design, and are guaranteed never to rust.

The spinners are shipped flat and should be "fanned out" for best effect. Read the wind spinner instructions here.

Our spinners:

  • Are manufactured in the USA by Dakota Steel Art
  • Are made of laser-cut, 400 series, 18 gauge stainless steel (the lower the gauge number, the thicker the steel)
  • Include a heavy-duty stainless steel swivel so they turn easily even in lighter breezes
  • Have a high-gloss, intensely colored powder-coated finish
  • Carry a lifetime guarantee against rust. If your wind spinner ever rusts, return it for a replacement.
